A professional
Art is my passion. My art entails creating objects with recycled materials. When people first look at my projects of art,  at first they do not realize how they are made. However, once they see that they are made from ordinary household items that are not appreciated, they realize that they can give a second life to those items.

I believe that visual impact makes a stronger statement because we often judge things by how we see them, and we do not give them a chance.

My art can be expressed and interpreted in different ways. When I look at the trash I think to myself of the many ways that this trash can be turn into extraordinary forms of art, and what kind of food people eat.

Through this form of art I have become aware of the meaning behind the trash in different communities. While I collect trash to make art, others collect them to survive just like the biological symbiotic relationship. For example, the birds feed off of the crocodile while the crocodile is being cleaned up. They both benefit.

I do this type of art because I have control. There are issues such us abortion, where people question whether or not it is correct to give life to someone or something. I do not have to contemplate political issues because the creation of the piece is up to me, because art crosses all boundaries.

Therefore, I do not have to adhere to any men-created rules. It is up to me, and God over my creations. I can choose the color, texture, materials and the meaning behind them. In this society everything is coldly calculated and premade. We have a routine to get up in the morning, eat breakfast and go to work. Through my art I am able to control how, when and why I am creating a piece. I have also been able to see the inequality in food behaviors and the lack of opportunity to access healthier food options in underrepresented communities.

Sharing Memories

When I see my daughter’s interpretations of my stories recreated on paper I want to be able to not only preserve forever the feeling in my heart but also to share with friends and family. Each project has a history often based on stories from my childhood memories, culture or family traditions that take us
home to Peru.

With my children

My youngest loves to help by mixing the background colors, we sing songs to make the stories come alive and inspire us. We work together to transform from simple image to a more complicated &  embellished creation made from rich memories, concepts and materials.

More than 200 people came to Arts at the Armory Saturday, where artists, crafters, recyclers, and upcyclers submitted creations to the Trash Bash: Somerville’s First Recycled Art Competition. The event also included music and workshops. Chains were constructed of can poptops, a guitar was embellished with found items,  and Jackie Olivia wore a dress made of used playing cards. First prize winners at the event were Liam Berets
